Hackers claim to have cracked new "secure" Xbox

Two competing teams of hackers claim to have cracked the new 'secure' Version 2 of the Xbox in under a week. The teams claim that their modifications opens the door to allow the Xbox to perform a number of tricks that Microsoft and graphics chip designer Nvidia would prefer it didn't. Team Xecuter say that their device, which they expect to be selling shortly at around $45 will enable modifiers to run alternate operating systems like Linux and play 'homebrew' code as well as imports and code from all regions. ...more

Tech giants eye financial services market

Ericsson and IBM have announced an alliance to create an infrastructure for mobile comms financial services. The goal is to help build beyond services such as just checking account information - they want to support additional "high-value" financial services, such as mobile trading, general wealth management and credit card processing. JPEG Committee hits back at patent claim

The JPEG Committee is to hit back over claims by US videoconferencing company Forgent and its lawyers that it 'owns' the patent to JPEG's run-length encoding data compression technology. The Committee is now seeking to prove that 'prior art' exists to the granting of the patent in 1995 and is gathering examples from around the world.
