Adobe acquires image management technology

Adobe has acquired digital photography management specialist Fotiva in an attempt to satisfy perceived high consumer demand for image management systems for organising and sharing digital photography. Adobe aims to combine Fotiva's focus on 'end-to-end' solutions with its own expertise in digital imaging and manipulation, layout and ePaper in order to improve on what it calls, 'Web-centric solutions and hobbyist orientated software.' Analyst Alexis Gerard of Future Image said that by simplifying the process of managing photos, emailing and printing them and sharing them on the Web, 'Adobe is in a position to simplify and improve consumers' digital photography experiences, develop new imaging technologies that will foster the growth of the imaging market and, ultimately, benefit all users. ...more

Microsoft forces Lindows to withdraw from Benelux countries with threats of €100,000 a day fines

Microsoft has forced Linux distie Lindows to withdraw from the Benelux countries after asking a Dutch court to levy a 100,000 Euro a day fine. The move by Lindows is the latest twist in a saga where Microsoft has pursued the company around the world alleging 'trademark infringement', even though Microsoft recently lost the opening rounds of its battle in the US courts. Having lost that opening round where the judge rulled that the word Windows was non-trademarkable, Microsoft has gone to courts around the world trying to get an injunction blocking access to the Lindows. ...more

Online music swapper to be revealed, rules judge

An American Judge has sided with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) over a test case of online music swapping. The US telco Verizon Communications has been ordered to reveal the identity of one of its subscribers who is suspected of making available online hundreds of copies of music tracks. The RIAA has argued that it has the right to make ISPs reveal information about their subscribers, without the copyright holder being required to file a suit. ...more

Court injunction threat to release of Windows XP

Microsoft is facing the threat of a court order - brought by one of the states involved in the anti-trust case - to prevent the release of Windows XP until the outstanding trial issues have been addressed. However unlikely it may be that XP will in fact be delayed, the anti-Microsoft faction is upping the ante in the long-running case. Reuters reports that one of the state prosecutors involved in the case - as yet unspecified - is considering bringing a court injunction to prevent the release of XP. ...more
