Apple has made its first serious foray into the high-end server market with the unveiling of Xserve, a new 1U rack-mounted server system, and the announcement of Xserve RAID. It seems that News Corp is not best pleased with the way Google snapped up YouTube. According to the Wall Street Journal the company has complained that the search engine did not give the Murdoch organisation an 'opportunity to participate in the sale process' before going ahead. Intel peers into the future

The future of computing lies in peer-to-peer technology, according to a senior Intel figure. Speaking at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF), Intel's chief technology officer Pat Gelsinger outlined his vision of "self-organising webs," in which users share computing resources - such as storage and processing power - to work towards common goals. He also announced the formation of a peer-to-peer working group of 18 companies, chaired by Intel, and including IBM and Hewlett-Packard, to develop standards in this field. ...more

Bulldog vindicated over BT LLU bungle claims

Bulldog's insistence that its problems with moving new customers to its LLU network were the fault of BT appears to have been borne out by the Telecoms Adjudicator Peter Black. Black said that in July BT failed to make 20 per cent of LLU connections in time. Prior to May, whenever an Internet user signed up for a LLU-based broadband service - such as those offered by Bulldog - a BT engineer had to manually make the switch. ...more
