InDesign plug-ins mark the end for PageMaker

Adobe is to discontinue development of its PageMaker page layout software by offering existing users an upgrade path via new plug-ins for InDesign. The decision will mean the end for the software which was originally developed by the now-defunct Aldus and was central to the desktop publishing revolution of the 1980s. AMD falls back into the red

As expected, AMD plunged back into the red in the final quarter of 2004 despite a rise of 29 per cent in processor sales. The company reported a net loss of $30 million compared with a profit of $43.2 million for same quarter in 2003. ...more

Microsoft completes Sybari acquisition

Microsoft has axed Sybari's support for its Unix and Linux products upon completion of its acquisition. Upon announcing the takeover in February, Microsoft had said that this was its intention and says it will continue to support customers of the Linux and Unix versions of Sybari's Antigen, although it will no longer sell them. 'Customers have told us they want powerful security solutions for the enterprise to help protect their messaging and collaboration servers from viruses, worms and spam,' said Mike Nash, corporate vice president of the Security Business & Technology Unit. ...more

Intel unveils dual-core Itanium 2

Intel has taken the covers off 'Montecito', a dual-core version of its Itanium 2 server processor. Aimed at heavy-weight computing needs, such as business analytics and large data warehousing, Intel claims the new 9000-series chips double the performance and have lower energy requirements compared to the existing single-core versions, there's also a tripling of cache.
