ITV rejects NTL takeover bid

ITV's board has rejected a cash plus shares offer for the business from NTL Telewest. Following a meeting yesterday, the board voted unanimously not to approve it for three reasons: that, from ITV's perspective there is little, if any, strategic logic for ITV to combine with NTL; that the number of shares that would comprise the share element of an offer would be fixed, so that the value of the proposal would fluctuate as a result of movement in NTL's share price with no guaranteed cash alternative; and that the offer undervalues the company. Apple recalls 28,000 PowerBook batteries due to fire hazard

Apple is recalling 28,000 PowerBook batteries after it was discovered that the batteries could overheat, posing a fire hazard. Apple has so far received four reports of these batteries overheating and no injuries have been reported. Leaner BT makes fitter profits

Attributing its success to improved efficiency and cost controls, the telecom giant has reported a quarterly profit of ?322m, which is an increase of 61 per cent on the same period a year ago. In the financial quarter - covering May to June - the debt of the telecom giant was also cut by ?300m. More than ?13bn still remains outstanding, largely as a result of investments in 3G technologies and licences, but the company was faced with a debt mountain of ?30bn as recently as March 2000. ...more

Intel signs up for next-gen architecture

The wireless and handheld markets are the focus of a new licensing agreement between ARM and Intel, which now includes ARM's next-generation ARMv6 architecture. According to Intel, the ARMv6 architecture will become the base technology for expanding its own XScale micro-architecture.
