Microsoft and Fiat turn ignition for in-car computing deal

Microsoft has jumped into the telematics driving seat with Fiat, in its biggest deal so far in this arena. The deal marks the first time Microsoft has worked directly with a car maker, and Fiats using the Microsoft Windows Automotive platform will hit showrooms as early as next year. Fiat's Lancia Thesis already uses the software, but the partnership will see a standardised version used in a number of Fiat lines, including all Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo models. ...more

June date for 64-bit Linux on G5

The first fully-64-bit operating system for the Power Mac G5 is expected to ship in June. Terra Soft's Y-HPC, the 64-bit version of Yellow Dog Linux, is currently being tested on Apple's Xserve and Cluster Node servers. A beta version of Y-HPC for Power Mac G5s was made available in April and is currently the only fully-64-bit OS for the G5 processor. ...more

China cracks down on counterfeit goods

China has signalled that it is to get tough with counterfeiters. The courts say that they will be applying a stricter interpretation of the laws governing 'intellectual property violations' in future. The Chinese say that they have lowered the value of counterfeit goods that a person can be prosecuted for from 100,000 yuan ($12000) to 50,000 yuan ($6000). ...more
