Mixed results for Blackberry court battle

Research In Motion (RIM), the manufacturer of the popular Blackberry mobile, has been left with a curate's egg to mull over for Christmas. A US appeal court has found that the company has infringed the patent of NTP but has lifted the injunction which would have prevented RIM from selling Blackberrys in the US. Mind the gaps

A Friday afternoon story: Reuters reports that a British "media artist" is using custom-designed software to collect the silent gaps between words during 24 hours of BBC Radio 4 broadcasts. Matt Rogalsky will monitor the station on 12 December, compiling a 24 CD set with an hour's worth of nothing on each, and hopes to sell them as a collector's item for $426 a set. Toshiba notebooks with HD-DVD blue-laser drives on the horizon

Toshiba is to launch notebooks featuring next-gen HD-DVD blue-laser drives before the end of next year, according to Japanese news service Nihon Keizai. The range would fall under its Qosmio brand of high-end entertainment focused laptops launched earlier this year - which currently allow users to watch TV without having to boot into Windows. HD-DVD uses blue-laser technology to write up to 15GB on an optical disc and is supported by the likes of Toshiba and NEC. ...more
