Please note that there was an error in last week's story about the licensing of websites to reproduce guitar tabs. Music publishers license guitar tabs for the Web reported that the tabs were being licensed by the Music Publishers Association. Yahoo! follows Google into the research labs

Yahoo! has announced the formation of research labs to develop new Web search technologies. The labs will look at ways in which Yahoo!'s position as the most visited site on the Internet can be exploited, both to increase its popularity and to commercially exploit it. The project, said Farzad Nazem, Yahoo!'s executive vice president and chief technology officer, is 'dedicated to inventive computer science solutions that will help make the Internet experience more efficient, productive, individualised, and even more entertaining. ...more

Music downloading stalls in face of legal threats

New research suggests that legal threats by the US music industry have successfully dampened enthusiasm for downloading music. Reuters reports on the latest survey carried out by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, which indicates a 15 per cent drop in the number of people downloading tracks. Having interviewed 1,350 American Internet users, those who admitted to downloading tracks fell from 29 per cent to 14 per cent. ...more
