April showers backdoor viruses

Trend Micro has issued its virus roundup for April, indicating that virus numbers continue to escalate and increasingly use backdoor components to allow attackers access to personal information. The antivirus company said that it had detected 1700 new viruses in the month - 500 more than in March and 1300 more than in December. Perhaps more cncerning however is the increased proportion that install backdoors on infected systems to give attackers remote access - some 60 per cent. ...more

BT Yahoo! trumps Gmail with 2GB email accounts

BT Yahoo! has announced that all its broadband and most of its dial up customers will now get 2GB of email storage, 40 times the previous 50MB limit. Secondary accounts will also grow from 10 to 100MB. Other changes to the service include better sorting of webmail: 'greenlists' to ensure any emails from the people listed in the recipient's address book will get delivered to the inbox and not to the bulk mail folder, and changes to bulk email handling. ...more

FBI arrest Zombie pusher

The FBI has arrested a 20-year-old man from Los Angeles for profiting from adverts pushed to compromised computers on a zombie network. Jeanson James Ancheta attacked computers to gain remote access in order to create a zombie network. He was then paid for installing adware on the network and sending spam through it. ...more
